Sharp has been hard at work developing an image sensor to be used in digital compact cameras. The result of those efforts is their soon-to-be-released 20-megapixel 1/2.3-type CCD Sensor, the Sharp RJ23G3BA0LT.
Although the sensor features a pixel pitch of 1.20μm, it has the same sensitivity that current 16-megapixel CCDs of the same size offer. The RJ23G3BA0LT also has the capacity to support 720p/30fps HD video.
Sampling of the sensors will begin by the end of this month; Sharp will start mass producing the sensors this August, and plans to manufacture 200,000 RJ23G3BA0LT sensors per month.[Photography Blog]
