Rumors have been circulating regarding a future full frame DSLR from Pentax but we’ve yet to hear anything official in regards to that. To hold us over for the high profile announcement, Pentax has come forth today to give us some insight into their latest Optio VS20 compact superzoom.
This particular camera features a 28-560mm equivalent lens capable of 20x zoom and sensor-shit image stabilization. A big selling point of the camera is the fact that it features second shutter and zoom buttons for capturing images in a portrait-orientation. Past that, we’ve got a 16 megapixel CCD sensor, 3-inch LCD with anti-glare coating and a competitive price tag of $249.
Of course, given the specs, the Pentax Optio VS20 probably won’t replace a DSLR as your professional daily driver but it does raise a valuable point. There has been a lot of hype recently regarding the high powered phones built into smartphones from manufacturers like Apple, Motorola, Samsung and more. While it’s definitely true that these cameras are capable of replacing dedicated point-and-shooters, we’ve yet to see a smartphone hit the market with features like a 16 megapixel sensor or 20x zoom. Of course, this may not be true for an much longer but at least cameras like the Pentax Optio VS20 are available for those in need.
