Olympus Announces Release of First Electronic Zoom Micro Four Thirds Lens 0

Looking for an electronic zoom lens for your Olympus PEN compact system camera? The M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm F3.5-6.3 EZ will be released mid-January 2012 by Olympus to fulfill this need. The sophisticated lens has many of the same features as the higher-end SHG lenses for Four Thirds DSLRs.

The standout feature of the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm F3.5-6.3 EZ is the sealing included. Multiple rings protect the body of the lens and prevent water and dust from penetrating the surface.  Use the Olympus lens in the toughest of conditions without damaging the lens. The dust and splash-proof design is based on the type used in the E-5, the first SLR released by Olympus.

The standard zoom ratio for the lens is 4.2x. At this level, you can take wide-angle group shots along with close-up shooting for portraits. A macro mode of 0.36x is used for close-up shots. Electronic and manual zooming options are available on the M.ZUIKO DIGITAL ED 12-50mm F3.5-6.3 EZ. The zooming speed is controlled by how quickly you turn the barrel.

Additional features include a lens function button to cease autofocusing, high definition video compatibility, still image capabilities and quiet focusing. The focal length is 12 to 50mm with the 35mm focal length equivalent of 24 to 100mm. Other specs include a weight of 211g, diameter of 57 x 83 mm and filter size of 52mm.

Although no official price for the lens has been released, the expected retail price is likely to be around $500. In the box, you’ll receive the lens cap, lens rear cap, instruction manual and warranty information.
