Remember the unofficial Star Wars themed firmware update for the Nikon D5100 that was released sometime in December last year? Most of these customized homebrew-type firmware routines come with a customary disclaimer to those who decide to install them onto their shooters: use at your own risk.
Your camera’s system could crash or become corrupted if something goes wrong. But here’s some good news for those who want to be daring with their firmware, but don’t want to put their cameras on the line at the same time: a Nikon Firmware Emulator is now available for download.
The Nikon Emulator allows interested parties to build their own firmware routines and test the whole thing out on their desktop PCs. The full hardware emulator includes a screen visualizer for the Nikon D3100/D5100/D7000/D* cameras that runs on Fujitsu’s FR MIPS processor.
