Eye In The Sky: DARPA’s 1.8 Gigapixel Camera Mounted On A Drone 0

DARPA gives a whole new meaning to the phrase, “eye in the sky,” with their new toy called ARGUS-IS, which is a surveillance system equipped with a whooping 1.8 gigapixel camera.

Currently, the ARGUS holds the record of having the world’s highest resolution camera mounted on a drone. It has the capability of seeing objects on the ground as little as six inches with a coverage area of up to 15 square miles.

With its powerful camera, the ARGUS can basically achieve the task of 100 predator drones (shown above). Imagine a single surveillance camera that can monitor a small city.

Footages of the ARGUS are stream live to the ground. Aside from that, the system also stores videos of up to 1 exabyte per day on board, which makes it a massive storage box on the cloud, literally.

Unfortunately, there are no images of the ARGUS-IS available for viewing right now, or even where it’s being used as of this moment. But one thing’s for sure: “Big Brother” is indeed watching.
