Update 06.02.2011
A new update on the 24-70 f/2.8 L II today from CanonRumors. We now have a picture of the lens and know (still a rumor however) it will be lighter and with a 82mm Thread. I am surprised the lens is shifting to 82mm as the previous version was 77mm the current 70-200 f/2.8L II also has a 77m thread.

The Canon 24-70 f/2.8L (version I) is my most used lens. It is a great focal length for a walk around lens – capturing architecture and landscape at the 24mm end, and candid portraits at the 70mm end. While the other lenses in the ‘magical trinity’ (16-35 f/2.8L and 70-200 f/2.8L) have received their upgrade, the 24-70 still sits at version I. Canon Rumors has been getting in more information about an upgrade however, and it appears the Lens Fairy may be brining a new version soon.
The latest update suggests the lens will be an external zoom lens (like the current version, and unlike the 70-200) and will NOT have IS (image stabilization), also like the current version. I don’t mind that the lens has external zoom but I would be pretty happy to see an IS version.
