Rumor History
A few images of the 5D have finally been leaked. They appear to be the real deal – with the name of the new camera being 5D Mark III. Thanks once again to Canon Rumors for the info.
As these pictures are of a 5D Mark III, it gives more credence to the rumor that there will also be an additional camera called the 5DX, which would continue with this years naming convention of X series cameras. Just guessing (and hoping).
And a few more images…

Canon 5D Mark III Rumor Report History
2012.02.17 – Two pictures of the 5D Mark III camera were leaked
2012.02.26 – Announcement date set for March 2. 2012 [CanonRumors]
2012.02.20 – More confirmation that the 5D line will be split into the 5DX and 5D Mark III with the X camera being the high megapixel camera many have been waiting for.
2012.02.14 – Essentially more of the same in regards to specs, but the announcement date as been somewhat confirmed as Feb. 28. [Canon Rumors]
2012.02.02 – Announcement date is possibly set for late Feb + a few modified specs [Canon Rumors]
2012.01.27 – A supposed confirmed fps rating and megapixel count were announced on the Aquatech FB page. [Canon Rumors]
2012.01.20 – The rumors are getting stronger for a 20 something MP camera (unfortunately) – we can hope Canon will blow us out of the water with image quality. New additions to the specs today are: 5 fps, 19 (or so) auto focus points, and eye controlled autofocus?! [Canon Rumors]
2011.12.28 – Release date is quite certainly the summer with an announcement happening in March / April [Canon Rumors]
Things seem to be going back and forth a bit. Northlight Images, which has a pretty good rumor reputation, puts the 5D in the 1DX boat – meaning 18MP. There seems to be two camps – a 30MP camp and an 18MP camp… perhaps there are several new cameras coming out over the next years or perhaps Canon is keeping several ‘cards’ available for play – waiting to see what the competition does.
2011.12.14 – Back to a measly 18 MP [NI]
2011.12.06 – Pixel count over 30mp [Canon Rumors]
Last week we were hearing rumors of Canon reducing the pixel count on the 5D mark III to 19mp, which would keep it in line with the recently announced Canon 1DX. I understand (and agree) than the pixel race is, and should be over, at least for the P&S crowd – but a little piece of me was still disappointed. I shoot microstock photography and in that field, sale price is determined by pixel dimensions. Needless to say, I want more pixels!
Canon Rumors has some good news for me today suggesting the pixel count could be above 30 – news I like to hear. Auto-focus still sounds to be lacking and the FPS would be modest as it is now (3-4 fps).
2011.11.08 – Canon 5D mark III’s are spotted in the ‘wild’ [Canon Rumors]
2011.09.14 – Spec Update [Canon Rumors]
- 24MP
- Pro grade AF (not 7D like)
- 2 stops better ISO than 5D mk II
- Digic V
- 6 fps
- New video codec, not Raw. MPEG 4:2:2, new video functions such as tracking focus in video mode
- Compact body with improved weather sealed

These are all interesting specs for many reasons. Just hope CR is correct about the announcement date(s) being in the next two weeks. we feel that wait has been longer then usual or necessary. But if this wait will be over very soon and we are happy with the results alls good here in Canon land.
