An Unofficial “Star Wars” Themed Firmware Update for Your Nikon D5100 0

For this piece of information to be of actual use to you, you must be at least one or all of the following (with the last item on the list being the foremost requirement, that is):

  • A photography buff
  • A huge Star Wars fan
  • Owner of a Nikon D5100

Nikon Star Wars Firmware

There’s a new firmware update for the Nikon D5100, but it’s definitely not your usual update, nor is it official. This is actually a result of some people being able to decrypt the Nikon firmware last month.

The reason why we say it’s not your usual update is because it won’t be adding on any features or making anything easier or faster to do on your camera. Instead, it’s going to revamp your menus by injecting a whole lot of Star Wars into it. Here’s a list of the changed menu labels and the original text they replaced:

Holocron – Playback menu
Weapon System – Shooting menu
Super Stardestroyer – Custom Setting menu
Hyperdrive – Setup Menu
Go to Dagobah Luke – Format Memory Card
Death Star Codes – Firmware Version
A Jedi? – Update? (new update screen)
(help: StarWars v1.01)
The Cantina – Retouch Menu
My Menu – unchanged
Dark side of force! – Subject is too dark
Light side of force! – Subject is too light

Here’s how to get it: download the file, rename its extension to .bin, copy it to an SD card, and then install it on your camera via Setup Menu->Firmware Version->Update->Yes. You can restore the original v1.01 firmware if you decide you’ve had enough of the force, but remember: Use this firmware at your own risk!
