We’ve all seen the iPhone accessories that look to turn your smartphone into a full fledged camera, but just how good are they? Sure, you can snap on another lens, throw it into a case that will disguise it as a camera and countless other things – but how much additional functionality are you actually getting? Probably not too much, depending on where you look. This is quite the bummer considering folks typically have their smartphones in their pockets at all times whilst the same may not be said about cameras. Luckily, Kickstarter is at it again this time procuring a project that says to turn your iPhone 4 or iPhone 4S into an actual, high-end camera.
Dubbed the 3RDi KIT, this nifty little product gives your smartphone a whole slew of additional functionality when considering it as a camera. Included with the 3RDi kit is a detachable cover, a case, a lens grip and several different lenses. The case itself will act as a holster for both the lens grip and cases making it very easy to swap out individual lenses while being able to keep them all ready at a moment’s notice. Depending on which Kickstarter level you pledge towards, the lenses you receive will vary. Those who pledge towards the Basic Kit ($135) will accrue the case, cover and lens grip along with a wide-angle lens and circular polarizing filter. Opt for the Full Kit ($199) and you will get everything included with the Basic Kit along with a fisheye lens and a neutral density filter.
In all seriousness, while the 3RDi KIT does look to make the iPhone 4 (or 4S) a more capable shooter it would be far fetched to assume that professional photographers will be ditching their DSLRs anytime soon. However, if/when this project does get funded and the mass market gets wind of it let’s hope that the quality of Instagram photos dramatically increase. But don’t worry, I won’t be holding my breath.
